He was born in Lorraine, France around 1631 and arrived in Canada in 1659. Though still a soldier he became secretary to the governor of Montreal. On August 25, 1662 he and his party were attacked by Oneida Iriquois Indians. Brigeac killed one of the leaders of the Indian band, but suffered a broken arm and was captured. He was taken to their village in what would be present day New York State. He managed to get word to Jesuit Le Moyne of his plight, describing his preliminary tortures and asserting he and a companion had determined "to do and suffer all we can for the conversion of those who are killing us." He was sentenced to die by torture , which continued two more days when he was knifed and his body eaten.
