SEPTEMBER 12, 1929
Charles C. Conley
Charles C. Conley was born December 3, 1865, on the Conley Homestead five mile southwest of Buda. He was the seventh in a family of nine children, born of Geo. W. and Tryphena Sturtevant Conley.
At the age of fifteen he moved with his parents to the farm east of Buda now owned by Arabella Conley. At this place he began farming for himself, after finishing his schooling, which was received at the Walnut Grove and Buda schools.
On January 7, 1890, he was married to Grace Smith, who died January 11, 1892. To this union was born one son, Charles S. of Buda.
Mr. Conley spent most of the year 1892 on the west coast, after which he returned to Buda and resumed farming on the homestead where he was born.
January 30, 1894, he was married to Lizzie F. Sowers. To this union were born three children: Harold S. and Marion E. both of Buda, and Edna M. of Galesburg.
March 1, 1902, the family moved to the Courtney Warren farm one mile south of Buda, which he purchased at that time. He lived here until March 1. 1925, when he moved to Buda, at which time he, with his son Harold, entered the implement business under the firm name of Conley and Son.
After a short illness, he passed away at his home in Buda, September 4, 1929, at the age of 63 years, 9 months, and 1 day.
Besides his wife, four children and one grandson, he leaves to mourn his passing, one brother, Bert, of Waco, Nebraska, and two sisters, Arabella Conley and Nettie Zink, both of Buda. Isabella, Jerome, Frank, Edward, and Ida have preceded him in death.
On December 2, 1883, Mr. Conley became a member of the Buda Methodist church. It may be justly said of him, what he said concerning a member of this same church, “She has faithfully stood by her church and has always been a friend of its minister.” For years he has been an official in his church using this means to serve the community and his Master. May we express as our tribute to him, “In the most significant sense, he was a friend of the church. He who is a friend to the church shall be befriended of his God.”
Funeral Services were held Saturday, September 7, at 10:00 a. m. at the Conley home and at 10:30 at the Buda M. E. Church. The services were conducted by Rev. E. O. England.
Interment was made in the family lot at Hopeland Cemetery.
Relatives from a distance attending the funeral were as follows: Mr. and Mrs. Silas Sowers, Elliottsburg, Pennsylvania; Mr. and Mrs. Bert Conley, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Trollope of Waco, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. Ira Davidson, Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Conley, and Mrs. A.
