Jerry R. Peters, 63, of Elgin, died March 5 at his residence. His memorial service will be announced later. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Jerry was born July 27, 1947, at Hillsboro, the adopted son of Larry and Helen (Weber) Peters. He grew up in Oregon and graduated from Hillsboro High School. He attended Lane Community College and St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Mo.

Jerry was an entertainer and a minister. He served many churches in the Oregon-Idaho Conference of the United Methodist Church, including in Elgin for 10 years. His last appointment was the Buhl/Castleford United Methodist churches in Idaho. On June 18, 1994, he was ordained a deacon in the United Methodist Church.

Jerry and Shirley were married on July 5, 1975.

Jerry enjoyed tennis, fishing, bird hunting, camping and watching Mariners baseball. He was a member of the American Legion, Elgin City Council and the Clowns of America. He was elected president of the Young Republicans in 1967, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; his children and their spouses, Carl and Liana Peters of Rockaway Beach, Josh and Laurel Peters of La Grande and Chris and Tiffany Penn of Beaverton; one aunt; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his uncle.
