John David Houston, 68, passed away at his residence in Rushville early on Monday, October 24, 2011 following an extended illness.

Born April 18, 1943 in Rushville, IN, he was the third of four sons of Francis Owen Houston and Virginia Ruth (Richey) Houston of Homer.

Survivors include his mother and sons, Steve (Susan) Houston and Marc Houston; grandson, Grant Houston, all of Rushville; brothers Nelson (Brenda) Houston of Homer and William R. (Susan) Houston of Moscow; step-grandchildren Ashley and Brandon Meyer, Steven Taylor, Latisha (Ryan) Meyer, and great-grandson, Kaiden Meyer.

John was predeceased by his father Francis O. Houston and his oldest brother, Francis A. Houston.

A lifelong resident of Rush County, John graduated from Manilla High School in 1961 and attended High Point College in High Point, North Carolina. He was employed fifteen years with the Rush County Highway Department, leaving after the blizzard of 1978. For the next twenty-five years he worked at the ready-mix concrete plant in Rushville for both Wheeler Corporation and Shelby Materials, retiring in 2004 as plant manager. For many years John helped his parents by farming and working part-time at the Houston Sinclair/ARCO service station in Homer. Houston also served formerly as a member of the Walker Township Advisory Board.

John enjoyed many sports, particularly liked playing golf, and was an avid fan of both Rushville High School basketball programs. Most of all he treasured time with his family and friends who will miss his greatly.

Rev. Ray Sweet, III will preside.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sheehan Cancer Center in Rushville or Decatur/Shelby Hospice of South Central Indiana, both provided John with extremely fine care.
