"Stella," to me was the most perfect dog I've ever had. She was given to my dad by a friend of his in Kansas because she was the runt of the litter. My dad brought her to the beauty shop and she was such a cute little thing. Her first night at my parents house was spent inside a barrel of dog food so that she wouldn't wander off. My dad had collected a lot of rocks from various trips that he had placed on the front porch. When my mother and I would leave for work in the mornings, I would place Stella in the corner behind those rocks. By the time she crawled over all of them, we had left.

When she was still a tiny puppy, I took her with my father when he went out to hay the cattle. I set her down and she ran toward a cow to let that cow know she was the boss (she was a red heeler). That cow snorted at her, letting Stella know that she didn't think much of her and Stella yelped and ran under the truck.

When she was old enough, she went with my dad evertime his hay truck moved. She loved that truck and by then she had no fear of the cattle. She rounded them up and protected my father.

She slept at my house and backed up to her doghouse at night so that I could put her chain on her collar. I let her loose during the day so she could be with my father. For the most part, I spoon fed her so that the other dogs wouldn't take her food. She never was the type of dog to jump up on you in excitement; she was well behaved.

Something that I should have done and have always regretted was that I never had her 'fixed.' Doing hair for a living really didn't allow me to have the extra money to do that. She accidentally was bred by a dog that was larger than she and her uterus burst while trying to have her puppies. One was born alive, the next was stillborn. We took her to the vet and she died on the operating table. She had two more that never were born.

My dad made her a casket and she is buried where her dog house once was. I had entered her name in a contest on the TV for a Cinderella movie and she won the movie and a pillow case that said: Sleeping Beauty. We placed that pillow underneath her body in the casket, and wrapped her up with her Garfield that she had slept with.

My father is now haying the cattle in heaven, and Stella is right there with him.
