A cabinetmaker and thread-mill worker, James moved to Lincoln Parish, La. between 1865 & 1871 to work as a supervisor of a cotton thread mill. He married Rebecca Jane Harrell there and had two children. Some time after her death in 1881, he either returned to DE to live or was simply visiting family when he died there in 1906.
