Pvt. R. J. Allen, Jr., Killed in Army Camp Motorcycle Crash

Pvt. Raymond J. Allen of 210 Gertrude Street has been killed in a motorcycle accident at Camp Campbell, Ky., members of his family advised last night.
Private Allen suffered a fractured skull and broken back.
The accident occured Tuesday and Private Allen's wife, Mrs. Stella Allen, left to be with her husband. She reached the camp Friday morning, shortly before his death.
Efforts were being made last night to locate Raymond J. Allen, Sr., father of the young man, who disappeared nearly 10 years ago, to notify him of his son's death.
Allen joined the Army in August 1942 and was stationed at Camp Salina, Kan., before he was transferred to Camp Campbell.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Stella Allen; a son, Thomas; his mother, Laura Allen; six brothers, Francis, Arthur, Lawrence and Stanley Martin and John and Weldon Allen; three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Eastman and the Misses Arithia and Lorraine Allen. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

According to U.S. Army Enlistment Records from World War II, Raymond J Allen enlisted at Syracuse, New York on Sept. 16, 1942 as a Private "Army Selectee" with a term of "Duration of War, Plus 6 Months." His Service Serial Number was 32476317. He is shown as being born in New York in 1921. At the time of his enlistment, he was a married civilian, a resident of Onondaga County with a Grammar School education and listed "Semiskilled Chauffeurs and Drivers, Bus, Taxi, Truck, and Tractor" as his civilian occupation.

According to U.S. World War II Draft Card dated Feb. 15, 1942, Raymond John Allen resided at 220 Fitch Street in Syracuse, New York. He was born on Sep. 18, 1921 in Syracuse. His mother, Laura Allen, is listed as a "person who will always know your address." His employer is listed as "H & A. Trucking Co - John Horton, 105 Albert Ave., Myer Alpert, 1329 S. State [Street], Syracuse, N.Y." He was 5 feet 5-1/2 inches tall, weighed 130 pounds, had brown hair and blue eyes.

According to WWII U.S. Army casualty information, Allen, Raymond J. Allen, Ser. No. 32476317 is listed as having died of non-battle injuries (DNB, "Died, Non-Battle").

According to Death Certificate, Raymond J. Allen died on July 23, 1943 from injuries "incurred when [U.S.] Army motorcycle skidded threw him to the ground" on Mabry Road on Camp Campbell on July 20 at 8:30 p.m. Place of Death was Station Hospital, Camp Campbell, Kentucky. Death certificate has his date of birth as Aug. 18, 1921.

Raymond Allen's headstone at Sacred Heart Cemetery in the Town of Geddes shows that he was assigned to the 20th Armored Division. The 20th AD was activated on 15 March 1943 at Camp Campbell in Kentucky.

According to cemetery records, date of birth is listed as Aug. 18, 1921, died on July 23, 1943.
