Minister, political activist. Became the first chaplain for the 54th Massachusetts Regiment in 1863. He fought for equal pay for Black soldiers in Regiments 54 and 55. Petitioning the Governor of Massachusetts (Andrews) and President Lincoln, he finally achieved his goal in 1864 with the troops receiving retroactive back pay to January of 1864.
