The following paragraph was originally posted by Lonnie DeCloedt:

Known as the "Angel of Bodie," she was the daughter of Fannie O. and Albert K. Myers. She was accidentally struck on the head by a pick axe while a drainage ditch was dug around their house. Doctors tried to help, but she died three days later of her injuries.

Frontier Times Magazine (Lillian N. Ninnis, August-September 1965, p. 44):

When little Evelyn Meyers (sic) met a tragic death, Bodie was bereft. Men, women and children mourned with Al and Fannie Meyers (sic).

Al was a hoist engineer at the Standard Mine. He and Fannie were blessed, in their middle years, with their first child, a golden-haired little girl. As the baby became a toddler, she seemed a sort of fairy-child to the entire town.

Winter came, and Bodie was gripped in an icy spell. The Meyers’ (sic) front porch was a sheet of ice. To make it safe for walking, the ice was broken up with a pick and sprinkled with sawdust.

An Indian, who did odd jobs for the Meyers, was breaking up the ice, while Al and little Evelyn watched. Holding tight to her father’s hand, she would swing out and back on the ice. Then the Indian swung the pick and as it descended, Evelyn swung outward!

Al and Fannie Meyers were stark crazy with grief and Bodie was stunned. The little body rested at home till the hour for the services in the church where the town’s grieving people spilled from the entry, down the stairs and into the street. The choir tried to sing, but tears wet the hymnals. The minister tried to speak; tears wet his Bible. A little child gently slept the eternal sleep and Bodie wept. As the people sorrowfully left the church, sympathetic hands pressed the shoulder and bowed head of the Indian who sat on the last bench.

A beautiful Italian marble angel marks Evelyn’s grave….
