Born in Noodles, Texas, to Roy and Frankie Buckner Cox. He grew up in Noodles and Brownsville, Texas. He joined the Army in 1951 and served in the Korean War, France and Germany. After 22 years of service, he retired from the military July 31, 1973, he was a Staff Sgt.
He then began working for Lawton Public Schools in the maintenance department and retired in the 1990s after more than 20 years of service. He married Dorthey Jean Dixon on Oct. 26, 1963, in Lawton. He was a member of the DAV, American Legion, and National Rifle Association. He worked at Lawton's Skate-Arena for 18 years.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Jerry Don Cox Jr., of the home; a stepson, Ronald K. Newport, Burkeville, Texas; a daughter, Frankie Jean Cavazos, Warrenton, W.Va.; two stepdaughters: Diana Jefferson and Vicki Newport, both of Lawton; two sisters and a brother-in-law: Darlene Harrell, San Angelo, Texas; and Barbara and Leroy Cates, California; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Dee Horner.
Services were held at the Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home Chapel. Burial with military honors was at Fort Sill National Cemetery, Elgin.
