Bavaria (Bayern), Germany

Margaretha Gieck nee Esper was born in "Lichtenstein, Kingdom of Bavaria." She, her husband, Gottfried Gieck, and her daughter, Elisa, immigrated to America arriving NY 3 September 1846; see image to right. From there, the family headed to Cincinnati. Circa 1858, the Gieck family moved to Gasconade County, MO. Widowed in 1859, Margaretha married Frederick Schmidt 16 December 1860, Osage County, MO. She appeared in the best of health and her death in April of 1878 was totally unexpected. She appears to have died from a stoke or heart attack.
Partial obituary from Der Christliche Apologete: ...Sister Schmidt made for many years the Martha Services for the church with a willing heart (Martha Dienste is deaconry – at that time it often meant nursing). She was respected and loved and leaves behind a husband and seven children, all who are grown, and many relatives. ...
