Perhaps best known for the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City Missouri, J.C. Nichols was born on a farm near Olathe, Kansas. In Kansas City, his credits include quietly acquiring the property for the Liberty Memorial, then selling to the city at cost. As one of the three original trustees of the William Rockhill Nelson bequest, he was a force in the creation of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. When the Kansas City Art Institute was floundering downtown, Nichols assumed its presidency and gave it new life. He was also instrumental in the establishment of Midwest Research Institute here too.
