There is a tall monument (see photo) to Col. J. Andrew Barhydt (1814-1905) and his wife, Alida Ann, in Vale Cemetery. On the back of the monument there are inscriptions for Cornelius Barhydt and Rachel Barhydt and John C. Barhydt and wife, Maria (Van Slyck) Barhydt and Catharine Barhydt, but Rachel died in 1809 and Cornelius in 1816, and this large monument obviously dates to 1905 or later, not to the 1809-1816 period. Older tombstones for Cornelius and Rachel (presumably moved from the old burial ground on Front Street inside the Stockade at the time Vale Cemetery was opened in 1870) are flat on the ground behind the monument for Col. Barhydt.

Pierson's Schenectady book (pp. 8-9) lists children of John C. Barhydt and Maria Van Slyck from Cornelia (born 1790) through Adrian (born 1811). J. Andrew Barhydt's 1814 year of birth suggests that he could have been another child of John C. and Maria. Why else would J. Andrew have an inscription on the back of his own monument for Cornelis & Rachel, John & Maria, and Catharine, unless they were his grandparents, parents and sister? Can anyone verify that J. Andrew Barhydt was a child of John C. & Maria? (The links below to his parents are based on the strong circumstantial evidence.)
