Josiah married Mary Ellen Delma Lilje on 23 Apr 1885 in Little Falls, Morrison, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Frederick Lilje and Julian Benoit. Frederick served in the US Army from 1857 to 1867 and was wounded at Gettysburg, Adams, Pennsylvania.
Josiah and Mary had eight children: Fred Andrew, Bertha Ann "Lillian," Henry Jackson, Nellie May, Etta Jane, Mildred Almira, George Washington, and Dorothy Irene. The first seven were born in Minnesota; Dorothy Irene was born in Oregon after the family migrated in 1902.
Josiah was a wagon maker, a blacksmith and later a farmer. He was a Methodist although he reportedly never went to church. According to family records he was 6'0" 180 lbs. He died 7 Jan 1938 of the flu and endocarditis.
