Mary Ellen Lilje was the daughter of Frederick Lilje and Julian Benoit. Frederick emigrated from Germany in 1853 and joined the US Army in 1854. He was injured at Camp Floyd during the Utah War (a.k.a. Buchanan's Blunder) and served through the Civil War including being wounded at Gettysburg. He fulfilled his last reenlistment in 1867. Julian Benoit spoke French and probably could not read or write. It is believed that her parents were French Canadian. Her name is spelled differently on almost every known record. It is believed that Frederick and Julian were married during the Civil War.

Mary had two sisters: Margaret and Anna Louise. Mary had eight brothers: William Henry, John H., Charles, Frederick, Joseph C., Daniel, Joseph C., and Frank.

Mary married Josiah Jacob Brown on 23 Apr 1885 in Little Falls, Morrison, Minnesota. They had seven children born in Minnesota: Fred Andrew, Bertha Ann "Lillian," Henry Jackson, Nellie May, Etta Jane, Mildred Almira, and George Washington. In 1902 the family migrated to Oregon and Dorothy Irene was born in Oregon in 1908.

Mary grew up Catholic, but later attended the Methodist church. She died of heart problems and is buried next to her husband.
