During World War II, Carl served in the US Army as a Technician 5th Grade (Tec 5). People of this rank were addressed as "Corporal" or "Tech Corporal".
Carl, with his wife Eva, owned and operated the Iowa Hill Store, Iowa Hill, Placer Co., California from 01 October 1949 to 28 September 1959. Carl was the Postmaster from 2 Nov 1949 to 2 October 1959.
Carl was very active in the community, being one of the founders of the Iowa Hill Community Club on 10 May 1950 (the Club is still in operation as of 2011), and its first Secretary. In 1955, with Robert Yonash, he installed the first phone line from Iowa Hill to Colfax.
