Ed Owen was born in Kokomo, IN in 1946, he contracted Polio when he was 6 yrs. old, and he started playing wheelchair basketball when he was 14 yrs. old. Playing, coaching, teaching, and writing about it became his life.... He was a 7 time U.S.A. Paralympic athlete, participating in each of the games held between 1964 in Tokyo, Japan and 1988 in Seoul, Korea, and the winner of several Paralympic gold, silver, and bronze medals in various sports including basketball, swimming and misc. track and field events. Ed was also a coach for the German women's wheelchair basketball team during the 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games. He was inducted into the National Wheelchair Basketball Assoc. (NWBA) Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987, and in 1995, he was the 1st American to ever receive the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation's (IWBF) Gold Medal Triad Award. The NWBA membership also later voted him as "The Best Wheelchair Basketball Player of All Time". He was known and respected throughout the wheelchair sports world simply as "The GREAT ONE".
