Another source, "Wiregrass Obituaries and Death Notices" Volume I, by Wayne and Judy Dasher, says on page 16,
"Joe Cox - The Valdosta Times - Saturday, August 11, 1877
Dr. Joe Cox, brother of Dr. J.J. Cox, of Long Pond, died last week."
Maybe this should have said, Died last month.
