James A Akers was the son of (William) Wesley Akers and Jane Steele, natives respectively of Virginia and Kentucky. James had sisters Susan M Akers and L M Akers. James and family were living in Saline County, Missouri in 1850 where his parents farmed. Apparently Wesley Akers died and Jane (Steele) Akers became the wife of Anderson Jackson Crum, a resident of Moniteau County, Missouri. James had half-brothers, George W Crum and Henry Crum from his mother's second marriage.

James married Amanda Jane "Manda" Crum, the daughter of Anderson Pigg Crum and Letitia Akers natives of Patrick County, Virginia. James and Amanda were married May 30th, 1866 in Moniteau County, Missouri. They had no children. James farmed his adult life in Moniteau County.
