Magdeline was one of six children born to Lithuanians William Jurkšas and Helen Kubilas. Other siblings that came to the USA are George York (the name he used in the USA) who eventually settled in Michigan, Anthony and Joseph York who lived in Pennsylvania before settling in Cook County, Illinois, (their names altered in the USA as well,) and her sister Alzbeta (Elizabeth) who migrated to Shamokin, PA and married Jouzas Sidiskis, aka Joseph Sidiski.
Magdeline married William Grinkevich, also of Lithuania in Kaunaus on June 19, 1899. Soon after the wedding the newlyweds emigrated to Wilstontown, Scotland where William aka ' Winca' worked in a coal mine. First born Joseph was born in Scotland within a week of his parents first wedding anniversary.
Charles came along December 9, 1903. By this time, the family was living in Shamokin, Pennsylvania. Francis was born July 31, 1905 then on August 15, 1907 daughter Agnes was born also in Shamokin. Helen and John followed in the birth order. By the time they were born the family had moved on to live in Steger, Illinois. Two other babies were born to them and died before the 1910 census.
Although Magdeline could not read English she was an accomplished crafts person. She crocheted a large bed sized coverlet sometime during her life. One of many items she constructed, this one in a block design of ecru crochet thread (like a huge doily) was particularly beautiful. It features a daisy-like flower at the center of each block and the corners where four blocks meet form a dogwood blossom. In addition to sewing she also enjoyed gardening.
Maggie's family was very important to her and it was apparent that William, "Vincent" as she called her husband, was the light of her life and he in turn was very devoted to her.
According to daughter Agnes, Magdeline was "a lovable, sincere person". Although her last home was in Dorchester, WI, she lived with husband William in the Medford Memorial Nursing Home in Medford, WI, the last year and ten months of her life.
