John and Ruby were close to John's Uncle Capt. William Durand Bogart and his wife Ida. They often visited his uncle and aunt who were living in Fernandina. Having lost their only daughter very young Capt. Bogart and Ida welcomed John and Ruby who were close to the same age as their daughter who had died.
Ruby Lived with Capt. Bogart and Ida after John's death. John was buried near Kate Bogart Mahoney the Sea Captain's daughter. A few years after John died Capt. Bogart died. Aunt Ida at the age of 79 decided to return to Nova Scotia after her husband's death.
Ida allowed Ruby to remain in the Captain's Large home at 509 Centre Street. It is unclear if she gave Ruby the home or just allowed her to stay there. Ruby used the home as a boarding house. This was much needed income for the young widow. This house no longer stands it was torn down to make way for downtown business after Ruby's death.
