James Silas Benback was born 17 Jun 1908 to Samuel Lewis Benback and Lilly May (South) in Camargo, OK. He died 12 Jul 1938 in Baynard, NM due to an automible accident while in transit to work for the railroad at the Santa Rita Mine.
He married Addie Vioma Conaway on 29 Aug 1930 in Fairview, Major Co., OK. They had one daughter, Norma Jean Benback born 1 Oct 1932 in Woodward, OK. Addie is buried next to him and their daughter, Norma, next them.
He was a wonderful husband and father. He had a delightful sence of humor as demonstrated by his photo with the 'cat'.
Note: both his parents and one brother 'John Edward Benback' are buried in the Ukiah Cemetery, Ukiah, Mendocino County, CA

Silas is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Benback also of this place, having lived here only a few years.
The wedding took place at Fairview, OK. After spending a few days with Mrs. Benback's brother (this would be Dee Conaway) and wife the couple left for Goff, Kansas, where they expect to locate for the present.
Their many friends wish them a long and prosperous life over the matrimonial sea.

Story as told to Vy Whitaker by Addie V. Conaway-Benback-Whitaker:
Silas was riding in the back of a railroad work truck with other workers. The truck wrecked killing Silas and injuring many of the other occupants. Silas had been decapitated ; when officials came to Mom's (Addie Conaway Benback) door she already knew he was dead, as she had experienced a premonition of his death the night before the wreck.
When she was asked by the railroad officials to identify his body, it was a horrid shock when they lifted the sheet to reveal 'his neck with bottom teeth only; "a bloody stump wrapped in bloody cotton strips" these were Mom's own words to me (Vy) when I asked her what had happened to Norma's Father. I don't remember exactly when this conversation took place but I must have been in my late teen or early adult years.
I believe Mom and Norma accompanied his body, via the railroad, back to Oklahoma for burial in New Herman Cemetery, Dewey County near Leedey, OK Mom, Addie Vioma Conaway Benback Whitaker, Graham is burred next to him and their only Child, Norma Jean Benback Siegenthaler is burred there also. Silas did not have a headstone until Mom died in 1992. Norma's husband Otis Derrall Siegenthaler has their headstone ready for his death, it will be interesting to see if Derrall goes there as he's remarried now.
