Pioneer Lady Passes Away Here Friday
Mrs. Mary M. McClellan,Aged 76, Drops Dead at Family Home.
The last rites for Mary M. McClellan, Tenino pioneer, who passed away at her home here Friday evening, were held in Olympia, Monday afternoon at one thirty, with the Rev. Franklin Hart of the Episcopal Church officiating.
Her death occurred about ten o'clock Friday night, just as she was preparing to retire. She was in her room, and was heard to fall by her son Fay, who went immediately to her, but she, by that time was dead. Mrs. McClellan had been ailing for some time, but her demise was entirely unexpected, she having worked in the garden most of Friday.
Mrs. McClellan was born in Athens, Ohio, on February 4, 1852, being 76 years of age at the time of her death. On April 21, 1870, she was united in marriage with W.F. McClellan, who passed away here on Septem-ber 27, 1926. They lived in Wathena County, Kansas, until 1890, in which year they came to Tenino with their family. During the time a home was be-ing built for them, they lived near the site of the present city park. Soon after they moved to the present location of the family home, having lived there since.
Mrs. McClellan was a char-ter member of the local Alice Chapter No. 32, O.E.S. and the services on Monday were held under the direction of the chapter. The services were held in the Mills chapel in Olympia, and burial was alongside of Mr. McClellan, whose last wish was that they should be interred there. Pall bearers for Mrs. McClellan were all old friends of the family, and were Wilson Howe, W. H. Mullaney, A.D. Campbell, Geo. Stanley, A.D. McArthur and N.T. Clowers. Mrs. W.F. Wichman and Mrs. F.P. Myers sang at the services.
Besides a host of friends who mourn her loss, Mrs. McClellan is survived by five sons and three daughters. They are Mrs. G.B. Churchill, Mrs. William Lewis, Mrs. F.B. Newell, William McClellan, W.F. McClellan and J. R. McClellan of Tenino, G.C. McClellan of Albany, Oregon, and C. H. McClellan of Chehalis.
