Jean Burruss Arvin, of Richmond, died Tuesday, March 31, 1998. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Julian Ashby Burruss and Rachel Evert Burruss of Blacksburg. Dr. Burruss was President of Virginia Tech from 1916 to 1945.
Mrs. Arvin was a graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg. She served with the American Red Cross in Germany with the Military Medical Unit after World War II and at various military bases in the States. Mrs. Arvin was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Chancel Choir for over 30 years.
She is survived by her husband, James H. Arvin; son, James H. Arvin Jr. and daughter-in-law, Renee G. Arvin, and grandson, Ashby C. Arvin of Hartfield; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Julian Burruss, and two nephews, Bruce Kenneth Burruss and Thomas Lee Burruss, all of Miami, Fla., and one niece, JoAnn Lucas of Lexington, Ky.
Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Avenue, Richmond, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 3, at First Presbyterian Church, 4602 Cary Street Road, Richmond. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Foundation, Blacksburg, Va. 24061, in memory of Jean Burruss Arvin, Class of 1943; Memorial Music Fund of First Presbyterian Church, 4602 Cary Street Road, Richmond, Va. 23226, or the American Red Cross, Richmond Chapter.
