James S. Hawkes, Jr., 91, of Wilsons, Va. passed into eternal life on Thursday, September 18, 2008. He was born at Locust Grove Farm in Wilsons, Va. on July 9, 1917, where he grew up and lived nearly his entire life.

James was a U.S. Navy WWII veteran, longtime employee of Bevells Hardware, farmer and gardener. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Carrie Brandon Hawkes, and his wife of 60 years, Bea Hawkes. He is survived by his three children, James S. Hawkes III and his wife, Anne, of Charleston, S.C., Martha H. Brancazio and her husband, John, of Seneca, S.C., and Sarah H. Eck and her husband, Ed, of Wilsons, Va.; four grandchildren, Ian and Ellen Hawkes, and Matthew and Carrie Brancazio.

James was a lifelong member of Grace United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, September 21, 2008 at Grace United Methodist Church, Highway 460 in Wilsons, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church one hour prior to service.

Memorial donations may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, Building Fund, c/o Gweneth Procise, 1397 Wilson Rd., Wilsons Va. 23894.
