Hubert Volney Bays, age 93, died Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at Rainey Hospice House of Anderson.

Mr. Bays is survived by his wife, Thelma Cook Bays, their three children: Dwayne Bays of Findlay, OH, Mabel Faye Carroll of Jensen Beach, FL, and Mary Ruth Hare of Anderson, SC; grandchildren Ali Baker and Anna Hall of Anderson, Rebecca Rankin of Greenville, Kristan Prater, DJ Bays and Garrett Bays of Carey, OH, Ronald Carroll of Jensen Beach, FL; and two sisters, Imogen Ligon of Marietta, GA and Alice Bays of Vera Beach, FL.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Debbie Ledford; his brother Kenneth Bays; and two sisters, Mildred Haygood and Irene Napier.

He was raised in Blue Diamond, KY, by his late parents, William Jackson and Mary Craft Bays. Hubert graduated from First Creek High School and trade school as a machinist. He served in the Air Force as a welding technician and earned the WW II Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Ribbon with four Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Medal. He was with the 876th Airborne Engineer Aviation Battalion to Normandy and campaigned in Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. After the war, he established a very successful machine shop in Merritt Island, Florida where he serviced the ships of Cape Canaveral and developed prototypes for NASA. He built and developed the first portable packing house for vegetables and invented a machine to harvest and process scallops. He built the Hubert Bays tug which continues in operation today.

Hubert and Thelma retired his shop and moved to Anderson in 2006 to reside near his daughter, Mary Ruth Hare.

Memorial services will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 19, 2014 at North Point Assisted Living in Anderson, SC. A second memorial service will be held at a later date in Merritt Island, FL, to scatter his ashes in the Banana River.
