Isabella was born on Grand Cayman Island, then a British colony and part of the British West Indies, on Christmas day 1862, daughter of John Yates. Moved to Guanaja Island, Bay Islands Dept, Honduras and married Joseph Nathaniel Borden Jr aboard the HMS "Druid" anchored at the island, on May 12, 1882. Guanaja was populated by British citizens from the Cayman Islands and was called Bonacco by them. The family of Isabella, Joseph and their 10 children left Bonacco in 1902 and migrated to Key West, Florida aboard the ship "Good Will". Joseph died in 1933 in Tampa, Florida. Isabella moved to live with her son John Borden and family in Miami, and later to San Diego where she passes away. Some of her children were involved with boats, just like their father.
