Mary Ann Howell was a native of Kentucky, the daughter of James and Mary Howell. Having been born in Pulaski County, Kentucky, on March 1st, 1822, she grew up to marry Samuel Hodgdon Baker on Nov 8, 1842 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky. He was a carriage builder, trimming them in a way that made them popular with the citizens of Kentucky. As the business grew, they moved into a nicer home in Louisville, which was also needed for their growing family.
They would have eight children, including two daughters who never married but remained in the family home as was the custom of that time. She lived with her husband until he passed from this life on August 2nd, 1901. He was buried at Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky, where other Baker children and spouses who had passed had been laid to rest. She would follow her husband in death on December 14th, 1906, and would be buried near him at Cave Hill Cemetery.
One of their sons, William Thomas Baker, died from TB March 14th, 1900, in Albany, Oregon. He was my grandmother's father. Mary and Samuel sent two of their sons to bring his remains back to Kentucky, where he was buried at Cave Hill Cemetery. My grandmother never spoke of her father who had died just two weeks after her 5th birthday.
