Herman was born in Germany in 1853. He immigrated to Canada at the age of 17 years with his parents William C. Affeldt (1801-1884), Fredericka Affeldt (1817-1908) and his older brother Frederick Affeldt (1850-1874).

They settled in the Waterloo County area of Ontario.
