DOROTHY B. KENRUD

On Oct. 28, 2014, Dorothy B. Aro Kenrud, 93, passed away in Long Beach. She was born Oct. 25, 1921, in Dassel, Minn., to John and Hilma Peterson, who were of Finnish descent.
Dorothy grew up in rural Minnesota; the family lived on several different farms. She had four older brothers, an older sister and one younger brother. Her brothers were her primary playmates. They spent a lot of time playing ball and fishing in a nearby lake. She liked to say they were resourceful children and enjoyed their freedom. She also called herself somewhat of a tomboy since she mostly played with her brothers.
Dorothy's early education took place in one and two room schools. After the eighth grade the family moved to a rural area and there was no nearby high school to attend. As an adult she completed her GED and was very proud of the accomplishment. She was a good student and a life-long learner.
Friends introduced her to Uno A. Aro and they were married in July 1942, in Minneapolis, Minn. He was in the Army at the time and when he was discharged they moved to Seattle. Uno died in September 1967. They had no children.
In time friends, introduced her to Andy Kenrud and they were married in January 1974. Four years later they moved to Long Beach. They enjoyed fishing and friends. He passed away in January 1997.
While living in Seattle, Dorothy became a home health worker. She often told stores of her adventures, her bowling team, and of her family when they were young. She was an avid card player. She said it kept her mind sharp.
Dorothy loved working in her yard, and could make anything grow. She was pleased to still be living in her home, driving and learning. She enjoyed her neighbors and easily made friends up and down the Peninsula, especially if they were of Finn descent. She had a warm smile, a good sense of humor, a twinkle in her eye, high values and standards and a gift to make you feel welcome.
Dorothy was a Charter member of Ocean Park Lutheran Church and she was still an active member. Her faith was an important part of who she was. Graveside service was held Nov. 10 in Seattle at Evergreen Washelli Cemetery.
A Celebration of her Life will be held on Nov. 12 at 11 a.m., at Ocean Park Lutheran Church.
