Retired accountant, World War II veteran, & former prisoner of war—the firstborn of three children to Albert & Kathryn (Kilcoyne) Balmert—residing in Venice, Florida. Formerly of Wilmerding, Pennsylvania employed as a senior comptroller with Westinghouse Air Brake. Nicknamed "Al" & "Gene." Spouse of 70 years of Martha (Kirkwood) Balmert. Five children/17 grandchildren/12 great-grandchildren. Member of Rotary International, Habitat for Humanity volunteer, & volunteer tax preparer for senior citizens. "Forward observer," Second Lieutenant, 99th Infantry Division, United States Army, taken prisoner of war fighting the Nazis at the "Battle of the Bulge" December 17, 1944 by the German Army; liberated May 2, 1945. Promoted to First Lieutenant after returning from abroad. Died, age 93.
