Dickin Medal Recipient. A horse in the Mounted Branch of the Metropolitan Police force, Regal and his Police Constable rider were based out of the police stables in Muswell Hill in the norther suburb of London. In April 1941, a Luftwaffe fire bombing set his stable on fire, but he did not panic, and remained calm as he and his stable mates were led to safety. By 1944, he was a veteran of the Blitz and when his stable was struck by a V1 rocket, partially collapsing and injuring the horse, he remained "...not unduly perturbed." His behavior was credited with keeping other horses calm. His exemplary behavior earned him a nomination for the Dickin Medal, commonly called the animal VC. On behalf of the 186 horses of the Mounted Branch of the Met, he and two other police horses received medals on April 11, 1947. Upon his death, he was interred at the Mounted Branch Training Centre at Imber Court in Thames Ditton which also houses a small museum documenting the development of Mounted Police, and where his Dickin medal is on display.
