World War II US Navy Veteran. He was an Aviation Radioman Third Class in the US Navy Reserve and served on the escort carrier USS Liscome Bay (CVE-56). It was the Liscome Bay's first war cruise and he was one of the 645 crewmen lost when the escort carrier was torpedoed and sunk by the Japanese submarine, I-175 during the Gilbert Islands Invasion. The Liscome Bay was the flagship of a three carrier task group that included the Coral Sea (CVE-57) and Corregidor (CVE-58), commanded by Rear Admiral H.M. Mullinnix. The task force was providing close air support for the US Marine landings on Tarawa and Makin Islands that had started November 20, 1943. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Herat Medal.
