Bio by Darrell Brown and R. Jeanne Moran:

Alice was originally named Mary Alice, but switched to Alice Mary later in life. In 1910, Mary Alice Wirts married Walter Scott Neep in Sonoma County, California. The couple had the following 7 children: Robert, Doris, Donald, Ida, Elsie, Alfred, and Shirley. Both Donald and Elsie died as infants. In 1922, Walter died at the age of 33; he left his wife a widow with 5 children, the eldest of whom was 11.

In 1927, Alice Neep married Charles Clyde Houston in Sonoma County. The couple's first child, son Lewis William, was born there in 1928. By 1930, the family had moved to Oregon where they appear in Springfield, Lane County, on the 1930 Census. This relocation was short-lived, however; soon they returned to California where they settled in Yuba City, Sutter County. In 1931, daughter Ruth Alice was born there. Sometime after that, the couple divorced.

On the 1940 Census, Alice Houston lived in Sutter, California, with her youngest children, Shirley, Lewis, and Ruth, and worked as a laundress. She listed herself as a widow, but actually she was divorced. In 1941, Alice married Charles Franklin Brown, locale unknown. Initially, they lived on his ranch in Sutter County, but, in later years, Alice lived in the town of Sutter while Charles remained on the ranch. Charles died in 1959 while Alice lived another 21 years.
