Passing of Mrs. W.H. Alden

Emily Jerusha Williams came from New England ancestry, being a lineal descendant of John Williams, known as "The Redeemed Captain." Of a family of eight children, she was the sixth child of John and Phebe (L'Hommedieu) Williams, and first saw the light of day at Orwell, Vermont, November 28, 1827. She was the last survivor of that family circle except one brother, Darwin G. Williams, who is an invalid and has been a member of her household for the past two years. She lost her mother at the age of six years, after which she spent most of the time in the home of an aunt, who was a true mother to her until grown to young womanhood, when she spent several years as a schoolteacher. Early in life she united with the Methodist Episcopal church of Orwell, VT. In September, 1854, with other members of the family she came to Iowa, locating upon a farm in Cedar county. February 5, 1857, she was united in marriage with Mr. William H. Alden, a descendant in the sixth generation of John Alden of Mayflower fame. Mr. Alden was a native of Middleboro, Mass., and came to Wyoming, Iowa, in September, 1855. They followed the occupation of farming and with the other early pioneer's experienced many of the struggles and privations incidental to life in a new country. About the year 1862 the removed to Whiteside county, Illinois. Returning three years later they located on a farm in Madison township, purchased from Dr. Calkins, and containing 160 acres of unbroken prairie land. There they erected an unpretentious dwelling which they called home. The subsequent purchase of adjoining land enlarged the farm, and there the family continued to reside until March, 1888, when they removed to Lineville, Iowa, where Mr. Alden's death occurred December 16, 1889. In the spring of 1891, Mrs. Alden came to make her home in Wyoming. To Mr. and Mrs. Alden were given seven children, three sons and four daughters. Alton G., the eldest, owns and resides upon the old homestead four miles from Wyoming; Morrill R. and William T. died in early childhood; Harriet, Mary, Emma and Edith resided with their mother.
