THE LIFE OF SISTER CHRISTINE HAMMIE DAVIS

Mrs. Christine Hammie Davis, daughter of the late Effie Miles Hammie and Daniel Henry Hammie, was born August 3, 1917 in Henderson, North Carolina, in the Dabney Community. She went to be with the Lord on Wednesday evening, November 4, 2009. She received her education in the Vance County School System. While she took on various jobs in her long life, she prided herself in being a Press Operator with the Laundry Cleaners Business in Baltimore, Maryland.
At an early age she gave her heart to the Lord and became a part of her family's home church, Big Ruin Creek Baptist Church. As she grew in grace and the admonition of the Lord, she united with New Bethel Baptist Church in Henderson and Mount Hebron Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland upon locating to that area.
After returning to North Carolina, she re-established her church connection with New Bethel Baptist Church. As her health declined, she was not able to get to New Bethel but found great peace in attending Shiloh Baptist Church of Henderson where her nephew Pastored and where she was made to feel a part of Shiloh's ministries and in return she was supportive of the same.
The love of her life was Moses Lee Davis of Henderson, NC whom she married October 2, 1946 in Baltimore, Maryland. Even though he preceded her in death, expiring September 6, 1964, the Davis Family was very much a part of her life until the very end.
Over the last six years, her life was made the fuller and richer when she returned to N.C. to be once again around close family and to establish new friendships. Sister Davis thought there was nothing like Bingo at the Senior Center. Her hobbies included writing letters, reading the Bible, listening to gospel music, sewing, shipping/going on outings, watching baseball, watching "Classic Western" Television Programs, cooking, and socializing - talking with people about life in general.
Her life was one of doing for others which she viewed as her Christian duty. She was committed to God, her family, and the church and loved good preaching as well as "Soul stirring music." Even with health issues that spanned a great part of her life, she was not a complainer and relied totally on God to see her through any situation. She believed that if she prayed and had othes to pray for and with her that God would answer her prayer and He did. As a result, she counted herself very blessed to be able to do all the things that she could do especially in her sunset years.
Those whom she loved dearly and leaves to cherish her memories are: a sister, Mrs. Marie H. Ratliff of Raleigh, NC; a brother, Mr. Daniel Hammie of Chesapeake, Virginia; a nephew, niece, and great nephew whom she loved and lived with: Rev. Joseph L. Ratliff, Deaconess Charlene Ratliff and Joseph L. Ratliff, Jr.; a niece and nephew who frequently took her on outings and spoiled her; Mrs. Dorothy G. Hill and Mr. Larry Gooch; sister-in-law: Mrs. Verdie D. Howard who visited her weekly, took her on outings and spoiled her rotten, Mrs. Lucille D. Grimes, Mrs. Betty D. Smith and Mrs. Rose Baker; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who shared a special relationship with her.
For those of us whom she leaves behind, our circle has been broken as she now joins the ranks of all her brothers and sistes who went before her: Early Miles, James Hammie, Mary H. Parker, Martha H. Thorpe, Virginia H. Baskerville, Thomas Hammie, Emma Hammie, Lester Hammie, Estelle H. Lanier, and Jasper Hammie.
