Sarah Holmes Godwin (Maiden name of “Holmes” is from his son, William D. Godwin’s obituary) and her husband, Sion Godwin (b: ca. 1785, Samson Co, NC d: 18 Mar 1861, Dooly Co, GA), moved to Georgia from North Carolina. Information from research by Thomas C. Sutton contained in The Godwin Connection, a privately published book, indicates that Sion Godwin married Sarah about 1810 in North Carolina, and they had five children prior to moving to Georgia. William Daniel Godwin’s (their son) obituary indicated Sion and Sarah moved to Georgia in 1810, but if Thomas C. Sutton is correct with regard to the year they moved, 1810 would have been too early for the move from North Carolina to Georgia. Sion and Sarah Godwin were in Wilkinson County, Georgia in 1820, and by 1830 they were in Dooly County, Georgia, where they remained the rest of their lives. Sion and Sarah Godwin had thirteen children. The thirteen children were:

(1) Solomon Godwin
(2) Thermuthus [female] Godwin
(3) Mariah Godwin
(4) William Daniel Godwin - moved to Louisiana
(5) Sarah Godwin - moved to Alabama
(6) John Lewis Godwin
(7) Lavica Godwin
(8) Sparkman Godwin -- Died in the Civil War (The Godwin Connection, Thomas C. Sutton)
(9) Mary Jane Godwin
(10) Susan Godwin
(11) Zilphia Ellen Godwin
(12) Elias Godwin
(13) Eliza A. Godwin

After Sarah’s death in about 1852, Sion married Susan Mock Rayley on 26 March 1854 in Dooly County, Georgia (George Marriages, Records from Selected Counties [1828-1978], Georgia Archives, Morrow, GA.). The second marriage produced one child, James Napoleon Godwin, when Sion Godwin was 70 years old.
