After graduating from Fairy High School, James married his sweetheart, Barbara Audine Clark, and served in the United States Army Signal Corp from 1951-1953.
He then graduated from Texas Christian University in 1957 and began a career in education. He coached at Priddy, Tx., Sidney, Tx., and Trinidad, Tx. before taking a sales position at Balfour/Taylor Publishing and moving to San Angelo in 1969.
After earning his Masters Degree at East Texas College, he accepted the position of principal at Christoval ISD (K-12) in 1976. James served as principal until his retirement, also serving as Interim Superintendent during the '86-'87 school year and overseer of the construction of the new Christoval High School.
Even after retirement in 1988, James still enjoyed attending basketball and football games, cheering on his Cougars for many years.
James Abel was preceded in death by his beloved bride, Audine, and by his two older siblings: Joylette Rivers of Raleigh, NC. and Charles Abel of Dallas.
He is survived by his son, Clark Abel (Sherry, wife); daughter, Kim Abel Snell (Danny, husband); grandson, Justin Abel (Joni, wife); granddaughters, Jenna Abel and Leila Snell; and great-grandson, Jackson Abel, all of San Angelo. He is also survived by his 2 younger brothers: Tom Abel of Grand Prairie and William Abel of Ft. Worth.
A graveside service will be held in Fairy, Tx. at 1 pm Friday, April 8th.
