Man dies after crash on Ind. 46

A Bartholomew County man was killed Friday when his car collided head-on with a van on the west side of Columbus. John Armuth, 59, was a retired Brownstown Central High School teacher. Armuth had driven eastbound on Jonathan Moore Pike at about 10:30 a.m. when he stopped and signaled to make a left turn onto Carlos Folger Drive, according to Columbus Police Department. His car was hit from behind by an eastbound pickup truck driven by Adam Wagler, 32, of Morgantown, CPD spokesman Lt. Joe Richardson said. The crash pushed Armuth's car into oncoming traffic in the westbound lane of Jonathan Moore Pike. A westbound van driven by Ryan Neat, 26, of Speedway, collided head-on with Armuth's car, Richardson said. Neat sustained a hand injury; Wagler had a small cut on his forehead. They were both was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital for treatment. Jonathan Moore Pike was closed for more than an hour and traffic was diverted onto side roads. The LifeLine helicopter landed on the road to pick up Armuth and transport him to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. CPD was informed around 10 p.m. Friday that Armuth had died. Columbus Regional Hospital medics, Columbus Fire Department, LifeLine helicopter and Indiana State Police all assisted at the scene.

He was born in Columbus, July 16, 1951, the son of Charles W. Armuth and Evelyn I. Pardieck Armuth of Columbus.
When John was younger, he was involved in Boy Scouts of America. John was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. He graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor's degree in education. He then graduated from Indiana University with a Master's Degree in education. John was highly involved in high school volleyball. He recently worked with Circle City Volleyball Club in Indianapolis and the United States Volleyball Association Juniors Division. He worked as a freelance photographer for The Republic, the Seymour Tribune as well as several other area newspapers. He had an online photography business called Armuth Action Photography, also known as Smug Mug Photos.
He is survived by a brother, Wayne L. Armuth of Columbus; a sister, Lorene A. (Marvin) Bradley of Columbus; and nephews, Charles R. Armuth and Greg and Chris Bradley.
He was preceded in death by his father August 13, 2002.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with Pastor Doug Bauman officiating. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from noon until service time Wednesday.
