Major Bobbitt was born to Quintina Leal de Sanchez and Martin Sanchez. After graduating from Villa Maria High School in Brownsville, she received an A.A. Ed. from Brownsville Junior College in 1938 and an R.N. Diploma from the Robert B. Green School of Nursing in San Antonio in 1943, after which she was assigned to its faculty and received her commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Air Corp. Following designation as a flight nurse in 1944 from the School of Aviation Medicine at Randolph AFB, she continued her lifelong studies both in Europe and in the United States, receiving a B.S.N. from Incarnate Word College in San Antonio in 1955 and a M. Ed. from Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio in 1970. Among her assignments during WWII was service as a flight nurse for the Air Evacuation Units in the Pacific Theatre, Japan, the Continental U.S., and the European Theatre, Germany. She was also stationed in England and France, as a Nurse Administrator and Director of Dispensary at Orly AFB. In 1947, she received a Presidential Citation from President Harry S. Truman. She was privileged to serve on the medical team that accompanied President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy on a diplomatic trip to Mexico and her last assignment was as Charge Nurse of the Emergency Room at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland AFB. Major Bobbitt served her country bravely for 22 years in the U.S. Air Force Nurse Corp. She was honorably discharged from military service on January 1, 1964. Thereafter, she taught nursing at Southern Colorado State College at Pueblo and San Antonio College, from which she retired in 1981. She was listed in The World Who's Who of Women in Education. Major Bobbitt was as generous, independent, and intrepid as she was proud of her heritage as a multi-generation Texan.
