Eleanor Almeda Hackett Vote was the daughter of Abraham Hackett and Mary Randall. Ellie was born on September 13, 1848 in Whitewater, Wisconsin. Eleanor met John through the Civil War. John was writing letters to Eleanor for his friend. He did not know if the friend survived the war or not. This is how Eleanor met John. They were married on december 6, 1865 in Whitewater, Wisconsin by Rev. Milton Rawley. John and Ellie came to Iowa in a covered wagon, either the last of March or the first of April in 1871. Two of their children died before they left Illinois. They settled near Callender, Iowa, and lived there most all their life. John homesteaded the last 40 acres that was left in Webster County, Iowa. Eleanor brought in Nellie when she was 10 years old. The Votes adopted Nellie on April 12, 1900. Ellie died on September 2, 1911 in Somers, Iowa. She was buried in Mitzpah Cemetery on September 6, 1911.
