Elizabeth N. Way Dillehay
Mrs. Elizabeth Dillehay, well known to many Mills County people, passed away at her home on July 8 and the body was brought to Mills County and laid to rest in the Hillsdale Cemetery on Monday, July 11, Rev. E.E. Goodrich conducting short funeral services at the grave. The following life sketch reached us to late for publication last week.
Elizabeth N. Way was born at Albia, Monroe County, Iowa, on 25-JUN-1859, and died 8-JUL-1921, at the age of 62 years and 13 days. On 19-APR-1874, she married J.M. Dillehay, an upright man in every respect, a Sunday school worker and a class leader in the Methodist Episcopal Church of which she has now been a member for forty years. Mr. Dillehay died of heart failure at Crofton, Neb., seven years ago while she since remained on the farm with her sons.
Mrs. Dillehay is the mother of twelve children, three of whom died in infancy. Remaining are: Mrs. E.A. Van Orsdel and Mrs. C. McDowell of Milford, U.F. Dillehay of Mead, Colo.; M.E. Dillehay of Gering, Neb.; Mrs. W.H. Tippery of Mitchell, S.D., and Nonie Dillehay also of Mitchell; Ceil and Merwin Dillehay and Aletha Blunt, who resides on the farm south of Harris. There are fourteen grandchildren. Mrs. Dillehay is survived by three sisters and two brothers.
The funeral was held from the home at 3 o'clock on Monday, 11-JUL-1921, the Rev. F.E. Leorzer officiating assisted by the present pastor, the Rev. Garner Osborn. The Milford Methodist choir, composed of Miss Leona Moreland, pianist, Mr. and Mrs. Landis, Miss Netta Yager and Paul Williamson, furnished the music, singing "Abide With Me" and "Jesus Lover of My Soul," and "When I Survery the Wondrous Cross." The first two mentioned songs were on her lips until almost her latest breath.
The body was shipped from Sibley at 1 a.m. Tuesday for Hillsdale, Ia., where her body will rest beside her husband's in a cemetery on the farm where they spent the early years of their married life.
Her Christian ministrations and cheerful disposition won her a host of friends all of whom mourn her death.
Mrs. Dillehay's death came as a shock to relatives and friends, all of whom had known that her health was poor but had not realized her condition was critical. She had been ailing for several years with a bad case of Hernia and this becoming worse this summer an operation was advised, to which she submitted on Friday 8-JUL-1921, but she never rallied from the effects and death came that same evening.
Those who accompanied the body to its last resting place in the Hillsdale Cemetery were Mrs. Van Orsdel and Mrs. McDowell of Milford and Nonie and Ceil Dillehay of Harris.
