Funeral services for James Stephen "Steve" Ashe, 58, Lawrence, will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Inurnment will be in Pioneer Cemetery.
Mr. Ashe died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005 at St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City, Mo.
He was born Feb. 23, 1947, in Charlotte, N.C., the son of C. Wayne and Leah Gibby Ashe. He graduated from Kings Mountain High School in 1965 in Kings Mountain, N.C. He received a Bachelor of Science from the University of North Carolina in 1969, a Master of Arts from Appalachian State University in 1972, doctoral studies at Texas A&M University and a Ph.D. from the University of Alberta in Edmonton in 1982. He moved to Lawrence in 1988 from Chicago.
Mr. Ashe served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was chief curator, division of entomology, Museum of Natural History and Biodiversity Research Center and professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at Kansas University from 1994 until his death.
He previously was an associate professor of entomology, ecology and evolutionary biology, chairman of program of systematics and macroevolution at the department of ecology and evolutionary biology, director of Snow Entomological Museum and scientific editor of Thomas Say Publication Series, Entomological Society of America, all at KU.
Mr. Ashe worked from 1982 to 1988 at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago as assistant curator, associate curator and division head of insects.
He was a lecturer at the University of Chicago and a visiting curator, entomology, at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, the University of Alberta, Texas A&M and Appalachian State University.
Mr. Ashe received numerous grants from the National Science Foundation, KU, Pew Charitable Trusts, Rice Foundation Research Award and MacArthur Foundation Grant.
He was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Coleopterists Society, Society of Systematic Biology, Entomological Society of America, Kansas Entomological Society, New York Academy of Sciences, New York Entomological Society, Society for the study of Evolution and Sigma Xi.
Mr. Ashe married Aagje Kroos on Dec. 25, 1984, in Reidsville, N.C. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Thomas W., of the home; and his mother and stepfather, Leah G. Ashe Puckett and Gene Puckett, both of Lawrence.
