William James Baird, son of William and Georgina (McBride) Baird, was born in Nemaha County, Kansas, April 16, 1889. He departed this life July 31, 1956. His early boyhood was spent in Nemaha County, Kansas and then the family moved to a farm near Formoso, Kansas.

After graduating from Formoso high school he continued his education at Kansas Wesleyan University at Salina, Kans., graduating with the class of 1912.

In June of 1916 he married Gussie Frances Bales and to that union Georgene Elizabeth was born. His wife preceded him in death, passing away April 30, 1918, less than two years after their marriage.

During college, William Baird was active in campus activities, especially athletics and he has always taken interest in the affairs of his alma mater. Most of his life was spent in education—as a teacher, athletic coach and administrator, being a member of the Formoso High School faculty for over 26 years.

Early in life he took part in religious activities joining the Methodist Church of Formoso while a high school student. He served his church in various capacities such as Sunday school teacher, Superintendent, and Official of the Board.

While in educational work in church and in school, the influence of his religious and moral character has been and will be a cherished memory of those with whom he came in contact.

During the latter years he has spent much time with his daughter, E. W. Wade and family at Pratt, Kansas.
