CORNWALL, Pa. - Hilda Stern Katz, 81, of Cornwall Manor, and formerly of Hagerstown and North Miami, Fla., died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at her home.

Born June 24, 1921, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Sara Macklin Stern.

Her husband, Arthur Howard Katz, died in 2000.

She was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

She had a career in advertising. She and her husband owned and operated six restaurants in Frederick, Md., Cumberland, Md., Lebanon, Pa. and Hagerstown.

She was a member of the Congregation B'Nai Abraham in Hagerstown and the Sisterhood.

She and her husband received the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Outstanding Citizens of the Year Award for Maryland and the District of Columbia. They made weekly visits to the Maryland Correctional Institution on behalf of Jewish Big Brothers. She was a volunteer counselor for rape victims, served on the Hagerstown Salvation Army board and the Maryland Theatre board. She and her husband co-chaired the founding of Children's Village of Washington County. She volunteered with the police department of Avertura, Fla.

She is survived by one daughter, Ellen K. Lynn of Lebanon, Pa.; one son, Harry C. Katz of Baltimore; and two grandchildren, Elias Lynn and Jessica Horst, both of Lebanon.

Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, Hagerstown. Rabbi Janice B. Garfunkel will officiate. Burial will be in B'Nai Abraham Cemetery, Halfway.

The family will receive friends Thursday at the funeral home at noon.
