Edward R. "Ned" Brownley, of Gettysburg, entered into God's eternal care February 8, 2013.
Born August 19, 1928 in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Mabel L. (Ross) Brownley. Ned was the loving husband of Joanne R. "Josie" (Slifer) Brownley with whom he shared 59 years of marriage.
Ned graduated from Havertown High School in 1946 and immediately enlisted in the US Navy, serving on the USS Severn until 1949. He entered Gettysburg College, graduating in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education, then went on to earn his Master's degree in Education from Temple University.
For the next 11 years Ned taught physical education, health, and science, and coached football and basketball in the Gettysburg Area School District. He continued his teaching career at Gettysburg College, along with coaching track and cross country, until 1972, at which time he entered into the building contractor business.
Ned retired in 1994 when he turned his contracting business over to his sons.
He was a long time member of the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, American Legion, Builders Association and Gettysburg Country Club.
Those who knew Ned and his keen interest in local history will remember him for his restoration of the oldest historical residence in Adams County, known as Russell Tavern, where he lived and raised his family.
In addition to his wife, Ned is survived by children Karen and husband Mark of Fairfield; Ross and wife Betty of Gettysburg; Kim and partner Jo of Mebane, NC; Richard and wife Missy of Gettysburg; grandchildren Michael, Adam, Caitlin, Aaron, Alison, John, and Hailey; and a great grandson.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., February 15, 2013, at the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, 208 Baltimore St., Gettysburg. A private family burial will be held at a later date at Black's Cemetery.
