Charles "Randy" Lomax passed away at his home in Los Altos on July 28 of complications from melanoma. He was 68.
Fiercely competitive, Randy also epitomized good sportsmanship. Win or lose, Randy made every game—cards, water fights, tennis or golf—fun for everyone. "Total Domination" was his signature rallying cry. Skiing was Randy's passion. He skied all over the country and the world but Squaw Valley was his 'home' mountain for over 40 years. He was a patient and excellent ski instructor to many friends and family members.
Randy was bitten by the travel bug as a young man and travelled throughout his life. His first solo trip was to Paris in the 1960s where he was meeting a high school friend. Through airmail letters only, the two agreed to meet at the "west corner of the Eiffel Tower". They found each other!
Counseling was Randy's calling. As a Marriage and Family Therapist, Randy enjoyed and was proud of his 38-year career in the Counseling Division at De Anza College in Cupertino. In addition to counseling thousands of students, Randy influenced thousands more in his Human Sexuality classes, a course he developed and which grew to be the most popular class in the Human Development curriculum.
Randy was a very generous soul: sharing his home at Lake Tahoe, helping colleagues navigate the college's retirement system, or offering his support during a personal crisis. Randy was the go-to guy for so many of us who knew and loved him.
Randy dedicated the last 17 years of his life to fighting melanoma. After his diagnosis in 1999, he learned everything he could about the disease by attending educational symposia sponsored by the Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF). In 2002 he was invited to join the MRF Board of Directors and in 2003 he became the Board Chair, a volunteer position he held for 10 years. He was instrumental in the creation of the MRF Breakthrough Consortium (MRFBC) in 2010, a national network of 18 centers of excellence in melanoma that collaborate to accelerate drug development of combination therapies.
Randy found true love when he met Mary-Jo (Kane) Lomax 22 years ago. In addition to his wife, Randy is survived by his father, Charles R. Lomax Jr and his wife, Roberta Tremain; son, Brandon Lomax; sister, Helen McMahon (Jim); brother, Bill Lomax; aunt Pat Lannin and cousin Lee Rufty, both of Charlotte, NC; many nephews and nieces and friends too numerous to count.
His ashes will be interred at the Columbarium at Christ Episcopal Church in Los Altos in a private ceremony. A memorial service is pending. Memorial donations can be made to the Melanoma Research Foundation, PO Box 759329, Baltimore, MD 21275-9329 or www.melanoma.org.
