A Fatal Wreck on the Pennsy.
Thomas Bowers, of Renovo, Buried Beneath Eighteen Broken Cars.
Accident Was Caused by a Broken Axle While Train Was Running at a Lively Rate.
Special Dispatch to the Sun.
Renovo, Feb. 13. A wreck occurred on the Philadelphia and Erie railroad, at Rathbun, several miles west of Emporium, at 3 o'clock this morning. Thomas Bowers, a brakeman, whose home is in this town, was killed. At 10 o'clock today his body had not yet been found. Eighteen cars were piled up.
The wreck was caused by the breaking of the axle of a car in first 30? Freight. Bowers was on a car two cars following the one on which the break occurred. The train was running at a high rate of speed, and the cars piled up on each other in a frightful way. Bowers evidently did not have time to jump, but went with the cars into the awful mixup. Wrecking crews were sent up to the scene, and a large force of men began search for Bowers body. He was fifty years of age. His wife died two years ago.
Day Express came through by the way of Ridgway and Falls Creek, thence over the Allegheny Valley to Driftwood. It was an hour or more late. Bowers was the only one of the train men who was hurt.

Bad Wreck on the Philadelphia and Erie.
A bad wreck occurred on the Philadelphia and Erie railroad near Emporium yesterday morning. An axle of a freight car broke and as the train was running at a high rate of speed eighteen cars were piled up.
Thomas Bowers, a brakeman of Renovo, was on the third car from the one which caused the wreck and he was caught in the debris. Wreck crews were at once set to work and Bowers mangled remains were found after several hours work. Bowers was aged 50 years. His wife died two years ago.

Bowers Foot Gone.
Body of Dead Railroad Taken to Bellwood For Burial.
Special Correspondence The Sun.
Renovo, Feb. 15. The remains of the late Thomas Bowers were taken to Bellwood, Blair county, this morning on the early train, where interment will be made. The body was not removed from the wreckage until Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock. When found nothing could be seen of him excepting one foot, the other having been severed. Up to a late hour yesterday afternoon the missing member had not been found, and the burial will likely have to occur without it. He was otherwise badly bruised about the head and face. It is estimated that the loss from the wreck is $12,000. Many cars of shoes, flour, grain and other merchandise were scattered along the tracks.
