He grew up in Nett Lake, and attended schools in Nett Lake and Orr. He married Roberta Moyer of International Falls, and they lived in the Falls area after marriage. They later divorced and Dion returned to Nett Lake. He has been residing in Virginia the past few years. He was a member of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa. Dion proudly served as a firefighter, and spent several seasons in the Western United States fighting fires. He also served on the Bois Forte Volunteer Fire Department. He was a talented painter – especially spiritual paintings, and several of his artwork hang at Fortune Bay and at the Nett Lake School. He loved spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren. Dion was always active, and liked being outdoors and going for walks with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his daughters: Jessie (Carlos) Hernandez, Kerie and Monica Porter; his mother, Mary (Birdie LaRoque) Porter; three brothers Harry (Jan) Porte, Gerald "Turk" (Jeneal) Goggleye, and Barry "Tyke" Porter; one sister, Rebecca Acevedo; four grandchildren; along with numerous other special relatives and friends.
Dion was preceded in death by his grandparents: Jess and Madeline Goggleye, Harry and Jennie Porter; his father, Harry Porter; two brothers, Brian and Lance Porter, and one sister, Gloria Isham.
Interment in the Bois Forte Cemetery.
