Edward R. Brown, 88, of the Barona Indian Reservation died Sunday. He was born in Descanso and was a video specialist in telecommunications.
Survivors include his daughters, Phyllis V. of San Diego and Toddy Y. of Barona; sons, Anthony P. and Samuel B. of the Viejas Indian Reservation; stepmother, Alveria B. of Ensenada, Mexico; sister, Mable V. of Viejas; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. tomorrow, with rosary at 7 p.m., El Cajon-Lakeside-Santee Mortuary & Cremation Service, 684 S. Mollison Ave., El Cajon.
Mass: 10 a.m. Saturday, Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Church, 1054 Barona Road, Barona Indian Reservation.
Interment: after Mass, Barona Indian Cemetery, Lakeside.
Arrangements: Paris-Frederick Mortuary.

Edward Roosevelt Brown went home to God with dignity and love, Sunday, April 30, 2006, at his home on the Barona Indian Reservation. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren during his final moments. He was 88 years old. He was born in Descanso, CA to Sam and Rosalina Brown on June 17, 1917.
Ed's early years were spent working for homesteaders and picking fruit, "Whatever needed picking, we picked." Ed told many stories of eating simple meals, living in dirt floor homes, and enduring a hard but grateful life.
During World War II he was an Indian spotter, keeping a lookout for enemy planes flying overhead, as well as a sonar repairman. He built numerous roads throughout East San Diego County with the "CCC," including Wildcat Canyon Rd. He retired from the Department of Navy after 32 years of service. He was the eldest living member of the Viejas Band serving as Tribal Chairman from 1942 - 1944.
He was a founding member of Viejas' first corporate board which led the tribe into the modern era of economic development in 1976. Ed had a passion for learning, which he imparted on his children and grandchildren. Some of Ed's passions included building model airplanes, amateur radio, videography, engineering, and the Padres. One of his last academic efforts was a language dictionary, cataloguing the almost extinct language of Tipai, of which he was a fluent speaker.
He worshiped at The Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Parish in Barona, and recited the Rosary daily. Ed was known to pick up hitchhikers, feed them, and even give them money. "Never know if that's Jesus," he would say. If someone's car was stalled on the side of the road, he stopped, popped the hood, and fixed it. Many times people would offer money, but he always refused to receive anything for his services.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 40 years, Eleanor, and his son Tarcy. He is survived by his four children, Anthony Pico, Phyllis (Craig Van Wanseele), Sam (Remi), and Lynn "Toddy" (Dan Yeats); 10 grandchildren, Tommy and John Elliott Pico, Kevin and Brian (Lillie Van Wanseele), Sam (Laura) and Richard, Joseph, Dirk, and Cheyenne Yeats, and Major Manuel (Karen) Hernandez; four great-grandchildren, Dakota and Jenna-Rain Hernandez, Isabella, and Jada-Reese Van Wanseele.
Burning of the Possessions Wed, May 3, 1074 Barona Rd. at 7:30 p.m. Public Viewing Friday, May 5th, 4-7 p.m. followed by Rosary at El Cajon Mortuary, 684 S. Mollison Ave. Services Saturday, May 6th, 10 a.m. at Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Parish.
